Dr. Larry McKain, Lead Pastor
Dr. Larry McKain is the lead pastor at South Church. He has
been a pastor and minister of the gospel for over 30 years. He
has planted and led four churches in Iowa, Virginia and
Missouri. He has also been extremely effective in assisting
churches facing pastoral transition. He taught church planting
courses at Nazarene Theological Seminary for several years.
In 1999, Dr. McKain founded New Church Specialties, a non-
profit coaching and consulting organization serving churches
worldwide. NCS currently has a part and full time staff of 50
with multiple offices across the United States.
Dr. McKain is the author of numerous articles and papers. He
has also published two books, “Falling in Love with the Church”
by NCS Publishing and “Loving the Church” by Beacon Hill
Press. He has written the curriculum for and launched a
training and coaching system for church leaders called New
Church University, which now has been translated into Spanish
and Portuguese. In the past five years, he has spoken to over
80,000 people and trained 4,300 church leaders at New Church
University.
Currently over 800 Nazarene churches have been exposed to
the ReFocusing process taught at New Church University and
over 1,300 churches have taken the Church Health Survey
through NCS. NCS has the full endorsement of the Nazarene
Board of General Superintendents and has also worked with
over 20 other denominational families.
Dr. McKain has an undergraduate double degree in business
administration and religion from Mid-America Nazarene
University, a masters from Nazarene Theological Seminary, and
an earned doctorate from Fuller Seminary. In July of 2009 he
assumed the Transition Team Leadership role at South
Church. Larry and his wife Denise, are the parents of two
children, Sarah 26, and Wesley, 24.
